From Broadway to the Bronx, I’m Strollin’ Here!

This past weekend I was lucky enough to spend with my husband in the legendary New York City. It was my very first trip, and I had no idea that it would be exactly like the movies! Bustling, exciting, and dare I say it- LOUD. It appears, in New York, that honking your car horn is a requirement to road travel.

Throughout our journeys from Times Square to Central Park to Bloomingdales (seriously, I held a Badgeley Mischka gown in my hands!), my husband and I couldn’t help but notice the abundance of one particular stroller. The Baby Jogger City Mini.

Without the use of hyperbole, I counted 35. And I only started counting on day 2! This particular stroller is my fave, and I was so pleased to see how successful parents were with it during travel. The fold is not your standard Umbrella Style- You simply lift a strap that is located in the centre of the seat and the entire thing folds swiftly to the size a small suitcase. Weighing in at just under 17 lbs, it is MUCH lighter than my suitcase was.

The front wheels, while there are 2 of them, are close together in the style of a 3-wheel buggy. They swivel easily- ideal for moving through large crowds or stores with tiny aisles. We even caught one with the wheel in locked position being pushed around the ice at Rockefeller Plaza.

The seat has a full recline, and I spotted many a wee one taking a mid-day snooze while clutching an FAO Shwartz bear or an American Doll. In fact, while reclined, there was still plenty of room in the basket for all of Mom’s shopping. With a weight capacity of 50 lbs, and the average weight of a 6 month old being 12-19 lbs, that’s plenty of room for a dress or two!

Also available in a double, this stroller is a proud carrier of the 2012 Cribsie title for the Double Stroller that will Save Your Sanity! Both children have plenty of space to kick back, but the stroller itself still fits comfortably through standard-size doorways. It’s weight capacity is a whopping 100 lbs!

So if you’re planning on traveling over the next couple of months, and I imagine many of you are as the festive season looms upon us, then do come by and have a look at this versatile little buggy!

Baby Paparazzo

Since I’ve started here at Fab I’ve become incredibly tuned in to the Strollerscape of neighbourhoods, movies and random websites. It’s almost like a grown-up version of Car Bingo as I call out “MacLaren! City Mini!! Bumbleride Indie!!” whilst watching movies with friends and family alike. I’m sure that this is an endearing trait, so I thought I’d share my obsessions with you, our Fab Public.

Some of our Faves have been popping up on popular celeb blogs like People.com, Huffington Post & Perez Hilton. It seems to me that Hollywood is rife with Baby Jogger City Mini’s. The Mini has been the stroller of my dreams for a while now, so ignore the gushing that will follow! This one-step fold stroller weighs in at 17 lbs and is ideal for travel- simply pull the strap in the centre of the seat and she’s folded. It comes in a variety of colours, has a lockable front wheel and boasts a double size that will fit through any doorframe. Celebs that have been seen strolling with either the single or double model include Halle Berry, Matthew McConaughey and Cynthia Nixon.

For the more active set we’ve been seeing a lot of the classic BOB Revolution. It has been the front-runner (pun fully intended!) when it comes to Joggers for quite some time, and shows no signs of slowing down in popularity. The swiveling front wheel provides the maneuverability that you need for city-living, but locks in place to provide a sturdy base for off-road activities. The Revolution has been seen while celebs like Gisele Bundchen, Alyson Hannigan and Jennifer Garner head out for a neighbourhood jog.

And finally we find ourselves at the heavy-hitter. The stroller brand that most celebrities are flocking to is the MacLaren. This family of strollers includes eight different models for you to choose from. They’re great for on-the-go parents who are looking to travel with something light-weight, yet sturdy. The most popular model for Fabbies and Celebs alike is certainly the Triumph. This buggy has a maximum weight of 50 lbs. It comes with a carrying strap, as well as a raincover and features a multiple stage recline. For a good indication of how popular it is, check out the huge photo album MacLaren has posted on their Facebook page. Amy Adams, Jason Batemen and David Blaine proudly push their models. And check out Jessica Alba below;

Purple People Seaters

Whether you’re watching Kate Middleton announce her engagement, tagging along with TMZ as they hound starlets or gazing longingly at the dresses in the Glebe and Wellington West shop windows- it’s hard to avoid it. Jewel tones are IN. All the richness of this beautiful time of year, tonally rendered in a timeless shade for all seasons. And some of our fave stroller brands have definitely taken notice. Just like in the automotive industry, every January we see new models and colours introduced to the wide world of strollers. This year’s over-riding trend is a veritable celebration of the colour purple. Baby Jogger, i’Coo, and Peg Perego are all featuring beautiful shades of purple in their new lines. We have nature-inspired shades like Amethyst and Iris heading our way on the functional and popular strollers we already love! As a (poorly) closeted purple fanatic, I can’t wait to check out the new shades. But even more so the great innovations these creative companies have come up with.

Arguably the most talked about stroller this year, the Baby Jogger City Select leads the trend adding a gorgeous shade of Amethyst to their lineup. This easily upgraded stroller converts seamlessly from single to double and features sturdy rubber tires with serious gripability. (That’s a word, right?) With a super-extendable handle, single-button seat recline and easy-peasy fold, the elves have been busy year-round keeping these beauties in stock. Strolling around with the 2011 model in Amethyst will surely make you the envy of other Neighbourhood Mom’s!

The I’Coo Pacific is so versatile. It converts from bassinet-style pram to a proper toddler seat with the ease of snaps and buttons AND includes the universal car seat adapter upon purchase. The foam wheels lock in the front, helping us Canadians on our snowy treks to the Timmy’s.

And finally, Peg Perego. This Italian design house is the provider of one of Canada’s top-rated car seats (owned and loved by many a FAB staff member) as well as a large variety of strollers. Their chosen shade of Iris, will be joining their large stable of colour choices this January.

So what IS up with the colour purple?? It’s the colour of royalty. It stands for luxury, sophistication and romance. I also think the fact that it’s so rare to find purple in nature gives it a certain mystique amongst it’s fellow greens and oranges. From a painter’s perspective purple is the bridge between warm and cold shades- a perfect mixture of reds and blues. No matter why you like it, purple is indeed the new black. And I daresay it would hide those unexpected stains just as well! 😉
